What Is Actually Included in a Garage Door Service?

Servicing is sold everywhere and defined nowhere. Here is exactly what a thorough visit covers.

The phrase “Garage Door Maintenance” covers an enormous range. At one end it is a proper inspection with the opener disconnected and every load-bearing part checked. At the other it is somebody spraying lubricant at the hinges from the doorway and writing an invoice. It is worth knowing which you are buying.

What a thorough service covers

The visit, step by step
StageWhat is done
Balance testOpener disconnected, door tested by hand — the key health check
Spring inspectionCoils checked for gaps, rust, fatigue; tension verified
Cables and drumsChecked for fraying, seating and even tension
Rollers and hingesPlay, flat spots and wear; lubricated or flagged
Tracks and bracketsAlignment checked, every fixing tightened
Safety systemsBoth auto-reverse tests, sensor alignment, force settings
OpenerDrive condition, limits, remote and keypad function
SealsBottom, side and top weatherstrip inspected

If nobody disconnected the opener and lifted the door by hand, you did not have the door serviced. That test is the whole point.

How often, here

Twice a year inland. Every three to four months on the coast, where salt does its work faster.

What you should get afterwards

A clear account of what was checked, what was adjusted, and anything that is wearing but not yet urgent — with a rough sense of how long it has left.

That last part is what lets you plan instead of react.

Why our winter is busier than our summer

Cold does not create faults so much as finish them off. A spring near the end of its cycle life, a cable already frayed at the drum, a roller that has started to drag — all of them survive a mild autumn and give up on the first properly cold morning. That is why our call volume climbs with the first hard freeze and stays there until the thaw.

The one test worth doing yourself

Pull the release cord with the door shut, then lift it by hand to about waist height and let go. A correctly balanced door stays roughly where you left it. If it slides shut or runs up, the Garage Door Springs are no longer carrying the weight and the opener is making up the difference — which is how openers die early.

It takes thirty seconds and it is the single most useful thing a homeowner can check.

The mistake we see most

Reaching for general penetrating oil. It is a solvent, not a lubricant: it strips out what was there, flashes off, and leaves the part drier than before. Then it collects grit. Use a proper lithium or silicone garage door spray instead.

If you take one thing from this

Stop using a door that is behaving strangely. That single habit prevents more expensive damage than any maintenance routine, because the cost is rarely in the original fault — it is in the cycles after it.

Everything else can wait for an appointment.

FAQ

Questions about Maintenance

The questions we get asked on the phone most often, answered the way we would answer them there.

How long do repairs usually take?

Most are one to two hours. Spring and cable work is quicker; track damage and section replacement take longer because the door has to come apart and be re-squared.

How quickly can someone get out to me?

We cover Connecticut every day and most jobs are same-day. Emergencies — a door stuck open, a snapped spring, a door off its track — go ahead of routine work.

What if the part I need is not on the van?

We make the door safe and the opening secure the same visit, then come back with the part. We do not leave a property open overnight.

Can I keep using the door until you arrive?

Not if something has snapped or the door is sitting crooked. Cycling it from there is what turns a straightforward repair into an expensive one.
